Operation North Pole Update:
From Barry Maples, Kansas ALR Dept Chairman:
This is an update referencing Operation North Pole – Currently ONP has no budget to speak of and what that means is if we don’t receive donation from the Posts, Aux Units, SAL Squadrons, or the ALR Chapter’s then we have no funds. As of the State Rally, the ONP fund has a total of $2,051.24 and this year we have scaled back the event in the number of families that we can accommodate, down to 250. Last year the number of families that we accommodated was almost 500. The Dept ALR purchased over $18,000.00 dollars in toys and half the families did not show up to have their children participate in the event. That means that $9,000.00 worth of toys wasted. Those toys were donated to Fort Riley and Operation Santa Clause program which has its own budget.
This year it was decided on gift cards and bags of candy for the children. With the current balance available of $2051.24 and projected cost of $5,400.00 for gift cards, we will have a shortfall of $3,400.00. The funds that have been stated is only for the gift cards and does not include the cost of candy.
If any Chapter, Post, Unit or Squadron would like to donate make the check to the Kansas American Legion Riders and in the MEMO line state that the funds are for Operation North Pole.
